Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned her family and she was fostered by her mother grandmother and godparents. When she was a child, Ford battled anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted by the word association. Ford began acting during her teens, and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time, Ford decided that it wasn't the ideal venue for her. Ford later applied to be a student in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but at the time she already had made her debut on television in the 1991 season from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate made her television debut in the year 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. She worked on stage regularly, and joined The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy, which she began adding to her repertoire in the year 1996, was soon gaining her attention.
